More about Ice Damming
Here in Oklahoma we are experiencing a phenomenom called ice damming. I want to explain this problem. Ice damming is when ice develops on the roof at the eaves, and then does not allow melting ice and snow to drain therefore causing the water to move under the shingles and leak into the attic and then onto insulation, drywall, and paint causing interior damage. The first sign is icecycles. If there are icecycles there is ice damming. I have attached a diagram to explain this problem.
I want to explain to all that this is not a fault in your roof, but is weather related damage just like hail or wind damage. Insurance may or may not pay for the interior damage. It depends on your deductible, and your insurance policy, and what it says about water damage. Usually the roof is not damaged, and the interior damage is less than your deductible. I recommend that homeowners attempt to obtain estimates for interior damage before filing a claim so that they can make an informed decision about whether to file a claim. Remember that it is still a claim, even if your insurance company does not pay anything. If you talk to an adjuster a claim has been filed, and if one comes out for sure one has been filed. No one wants to file a needless claim.
The only way to prevent ice damming is to insure that all gutters, lower valleys and eaves are clear of ice and snow. This should only be done by an experienced roofer, and should not even be done by a roofer in some situations. This can be very dangerous, and can cause damage to the roof if you do not know what you are doing. Do not place a ladder on ice or snow, or get on your roof in ice or snow. I repeat do not try to use a ladder in ice and snow or climb on your roof. It can result in catastrophic injury or death!
