Important Roofing Legislation

We've all seen the stories on roofers who have no insurance, take money and leave town, or come into town for a storm, put on a roof and 6 months later the roof is leaking and the phone # is disconnected. This has been a problem in Oklahoma for years. In the past we have not had any regulation or oversight of the industry, and for that reason we have had many contractors who operate without workers compensation, liability insurance, do terrible work, and don't honor their warranties. Some roofers have just committed straight up fraud, embezzlement, and larceny. Those guys can be prosecuted, but that doesn't stop them from doing those things in the first place. There is a solution to this problem though. That solution is quite possibly the SB 2180. Below is a brief explanation of the bill's highlights:

It requires that roofing contractors:

  1. Maintain workers compensation insurance as mandated by the state
  2. Maintain liability insurance (this has not been required by law in the past)
  3. File, renew, or properly amend a fictitious name certificate
  4. Maintain an active status as a corporation with the Office of Secretary of State
  5. File or renew a trade name registration
  6. Notify the registrar of any changes such as name changes, address changes, any adjudication of guilt in reference to the Act.
  7. File and pay taxes to the state
  8. Obtain and maintain registration

Please contact you Senator and tell him/her that you support this bill. This will help legitimize our industry, and protect consumers against unethical, shoddy, and dangerous practices in Oklahoma. You can also go to go to the FB fan page for:

More about Ice Damming

Here in Oklahoma we are experiencing a phenomenom called ice damming. I want to explain this problem. Ice damming is when ice develops on the roof at the eaves, and then does not allow melting ice and snow to drain therefore causing the water to move under the shingles and leak into the attic and then onto insulation, drywall, and paint causing interior damage. The first sign is icecycles. If there are icecycles there is ice damming. I have attached a diagram to explain this problem.

I want to explain to all that this is not a fault in your roof, but is weather related damage just like hail or wind damage. Insurance may or may not pay for the interior damage. It depends on your deductible, and your insurance policy, and what it says about water damage. Usually the roof is not damaged, and the interior damage is less than your deductible. I recommend that homeowners attempt to obtain estimates for interior damage before filing a claim so that they can make an informed decision about whether to file a claim. Remember that it is still a claim, even if your insurance company does not pay anything. If you talk to an adjuster a claim has been filed, and if one comes out for sure one has been filed. No one wants to file a needless claim.

Heartland Roofing can help fix your ice damming problems!

The only way to prevent ice damming is to insure that all gutters, lower valleys and eaves are clear of ice and snow. This should only be done by an experienced roofer, and should not even be done by a roofer in some situations. This can be very dangerous, and can cause damage to the roof if you do not know what you are doing. Do not place a ladder on ice or snow, or get on your roof in ice or snow. I repeat do not try to use a ladder in ice and snow or climb on your roof. It can result in catastrophic injury or death!

Project: Express Ranch Day 1

Day 1 of the Express Ranch Main House Decra roof. Very large project with a great product. We are replacing an aluminum shingle roof which was very badly damaged by hail. Our product is stone coated steel and has a 50 year warranty, 120 mph wind warranty, and is hail resistant. In the photos you can see the tear off and clean up as we go, and how we protect the property as we demo the old roof. We will apply ice and water sheild, as underlayment, and then the Decra steel shingle. Very complex job, but it will be beautiful and long lasting roof when it is complete.

We can handle all of your roofing needs from repairs to large projects like the Express Ranch project. Call us at 405-728-3333 in OKC. Look for our new location in Broken Arrow/Tulsa.
